Halsey Minor Speaks On The New Economics of Hollywood

The Digital Entertainment World(DEW) Expo in Los Angeles features a who’s who of major media and entertainment companies. DEW is the place where content creators and owners, enabling technology providers, digital distributors and device manufacturers connect to create the infrastructure and technology partnerships necessary to monetize digital content.

This year’s DEW took a dive into “The Power of Direct and Digital” a theme that speaks on the shift underway in the media landscape as consumers are empowered by new technologies, platforms, and devices that are enabling them to access media and entertainment content whenever and however they want. This three-day event brings together leading industry executives from video, music, games, and publishing — the entire digital content ecosystem.

For this years’ focus on Hollywood’s emerging battle between 12 streaming services, internet video pioneer and CNET Founder Halsey Minor was invited by the organizers to share his thoughts and lead the discussion on the economics of distribution in the digital landscape.

Minor talked about the economic changes brought on by so-called “over the top” subscription video services such as Netflix, Disney+, HBO Max and Hulu, and their escalating need for computing power and bandwidth for online distribution.

Halsey shared his insights on the economic opportunities for new technologies presented by the shift from cable to broadband-delivered video and how VideoCoin’s role as a decentralized infrastructure for Hollywood, and a variety of current and emerging bandwidth-dependent industries, will restructure the online delivery landscape.

The conversation opened up to the audience which included the movers and shakers of Hollywood when Hasley answered questions and shared advice from his days helping Salesforce, Google Voice and other ventures grow to profitability.
